Gallbladder Disease

Yaz, Yasmin, Ocella, Zarah and Gianvi have been linked to serious gallbladder problems including gallstones, infections, inflammation or obstructions. Symptoms of gallbladder disease include abdominal pain, chest pain, chills, fever, heartburn, nausea and vomitting.  In many cases the injuries caused by Yaz, Yasmin, Ocella, Zarah or Gianvi lead to gallbladder removal surgery.

The gallbladder stores and concentrates bile produced in the liver. The body uses bile to aid in the digestion of fats. If the flow of bile out of the gallbladder is slowed or obstructed, it may lead to gallstones and potentially gallbladder removal.

Gallstones are hard, pebble-like deposits that form inside the galllbladder.  Gallstones may be caused by too much cholesterol or bilirubin in the bile, if there are not enough bile salts, or if the gallbladder fails to empty properly.  Gallstones or Gallbladder inflammation are usually detected using ultrasound, CT scan, and x-rays.
Symptoms of severe gallbladder disease include abdominal pain, chest pain, chills, fever, heartburn, nausea and vomitting.  These symptoms usually occur if a large stone blocks the cystic duct or the common bile duct.  A stone blocking the opening from the gallblader usually produces a cramping pain in the middle to right upper abdomen.  If the bile duct is blocked for an extended period of time, pancreatitis or cholangitis may result.

Organ Failure

Yaz, Yasmin, Ocella and Gianvi are also known to cause liver or kidney failure and pancreatitis.  Symptoms of liver failure may include yellowing of skin or eyeballs (jaundice), tenderness of the upper right area of your abdomen, nausea, vomiting, disorientation or confusion, sleepiness and/or muscle tremors.  Liver failure is usually diagnosed by simple blood tests.  Liver failure can result in serious side effects including cerebral edema and bleeding ulcers.  Often times acute liver failure can't be reversed with medication and a liver transplant may be the only treatment option.

Kidney failure may also be a result of taking Yaz, Yasmin, Ocella or Gianvi.  Signs and symptoms of kidney failure may include decreased urine output, fluid retention (causing swelling in legs, ankles or feet), drowsiness, shortness of breath, confusion, seizures and sometimes chest pain.  Kidney failure may be detected by blood tests, ultrasound, abdominal CT or MRI.  Treatment of kidney failure may begin with limiting your fluid intake and following a high-carbohydrate, low-protein, low-potassium diet.  Most of the time, kidney failure will also require dialysis.

Yaz, Yasmin, Ocella and Gianvi have also been linked to pancreatitis.  The pancreas, a gland that sits between the sotmach and the upper abdomen, produces enzymes that help regulate the way your body processes sugar.  Pancreatitis can be caused by gallstones or blocked bile ducts.  Symptoms of pancreatitis include upper abdominal pain, abdominal pain radiating to your back, abdominal pain that is worse after eating, nausea, vomiting or tenderness in the abdomen.  Mild cases of pancreatitis may disappear without treatment, but severe cases may be life-threatening.  Tests to diagnose pancreatitis include blood tests, CT, ultrasound and MRI.  Pancreatitis treatment may require hospitalization during which time you may be required to briefly stop eating and be given IV fluids.  Once the pancreatitis is controlled, doctors will seek to treat the underlying cause of the pancreatitis.
