New Yasmin Generic Approved by FDA
The FDA recently approved Watson Laboratories, Inc.'s female oral contraceptive pill marketed as Zarah. Zarah is the generic equivalent to Yasmin, the birth control pill marketed by Bayer.
Bayer had previously sued Watson Laboratories parent-company Watson Pharmaceuticals, Inc. for infringing on its Yasmin patent. The distribution of Zarah has not been affected by this ongoing litigation.
However, Watson Laboratories, Inc. may find itself involved in the personal injury litigation against the makers of Yaz, Yasmin, Ocella and Gianvi. To date, over four thousand Plaintiffs have filed suit against Bayer and others for serious injuries including stroke, heart attack, pulmonary embolism, deep vein thrombosis and gallbladder removal. Lawyers for the victims of these birth control pills are seeking unspecified compensation for these women and their families.
